What is trochanter major?

The trochanter major is a bony prominence located on the upper part of the femur, or thigh bone. It is one of two major bony projections on the femur, the other being the trochanter minor. The trochanter major serves as an attachment point for several muscles, including the gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus, and the piriformis muscles. These muscles play a critical role in movement of the hip and thigh. Injuries to the trochanter major can result in hip pain and difficulty with movement. Treatment for trochanter major injuries typically involves physical therapy, rest, and medication to manage pain and inflammation. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace the damaged bone or soft tissue structures in the hip.
